Many eyes will now be on Spain’s Sergio Garcia for a great comeback, after a heartbreaking ending for the man who had lead the tiebreaking putt — but he could not deny Europe the Ryder Cup in stunning fashion after it raced into a huge 5 1/2 points lead and recovered from a sluggish start.
The much-criticized Team USA received a taste of its own medicine when four-time major champion Garcia sank the winning putt at the 17th hole as Europe won its fourth successive Ryder Cup — and gave its fans the second-largest cheer in the tournament’s history as it began to celebrate its win after Saturday’s fashionably late finish.
The United States held a slim 10 1/2-9 1/2 lead in last night’s competition at Le Golf National outside Paris before a stunning performance from Garcia, who won the match of golfers making the most birdies, and a last-gasp rally by Patrick Reed, helped the European side turn the tide.
Watch the video below to see why Garcia’s titanic eagle putt in one of the biggest upsets in Ryder Cup history took the sport by storm on social media.
