Letters to the Editor: ‘Measure A (for Alex?)’ — Sheriff Villanueva’s legacy in L.A. County
Dear Editor,
I have lived in Los Angeles County for more than 30 years. I am not a native Angeleno, but am a native Angeleno living in the County of Los Angeles for the past seven years (from 1980 to 1986). I believe that no resident of Los Angeles County has a more important duty and title to the public good than County Sheriff Alex Villanueva. In my opinion, he should not only be the head of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, but also the head of the whole Police and Fire Commissions, because, more than any of his other duties, he is charged with protecting the lives of all people in the Los Angeles County and the surrounding cities and cities of Los Angeles from violent crime.
Sheriff Villanueva’s office should not only be the County’s law enforcement agency, but also the Department of Public Safety and the District Attorney’s office. He should be the County’s public safety officer, because, to quote the Bible, “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away” (Matthew 5:29).
To protect the lives of every person in Los Angeles County is not only his first duty, but it is his greatest duty. The only way that he can fulfill this duty is by protecting every person from a violent crime, from a serious crime to a murder in which the person is murdered. He is not the only one charged with the public good. The Department of Public Safety, the District Attorney’s Office, and the Los Angeles Police Department all also need to fulfill their duties to protect the public from violent crime and murder.
Sheriff Villanueva is also responsible for the safety of the children in Los Angeles County, but he is not the only one. There
