It is with immense sadness that we hear the news that our great friend and fellow football legend Jimmy Greaves has died at the age of 81.

Jimmy was England’s greatest ever striker, playing in nine World Cups for England and scoring at all of them. He also scored one of the most iconic goals in world football at the 1966 World Cup.

He was surrounded by his loving family at the time of his death. We are all so grateful for the years we spent with him and for the wonderful memories he has given us.

He played for the best clubs in the world, winning everything there was to win, including five league titles, two FA Cups, three League Cups and an Intercontinental Cup.

He then made a hugely influential contribution as a manager, helping to transform west London club Chelsea into one of the most successful sides in Europe in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

I would like to thank Jimmy for always being such a generous friend and supporter, who I was privileged to know. He never forgot where he came from and that never-say-die attitude rubbed off on me.

Jimmy was an inspiration to us all and I send my deepest condolences to his family.
